What are pH levels?
The pH level of materials or substances are defined by either the acidity or alkalinity of the substance and is represented on a scale of 0 to 14 – 7pH being neutral, 0pH being acidic and 14pH being alkaline.
Public Health England has a useful guide to for the determination of pH in food and water samples using the National Infection Service Food Water and Environmental Microbiology Standard Method.
Maintaining and calibrating your pH meter
It is essential that you look after your pH meter to ensure that you don’t make incorrect measurements. It is recommended that you always wash the pH electrode (the measuring part of the instrument) in clean water.
To ensure your measurements remain accurate it is necessary to calibrate your pH meters on a regular basis. For this you will need to use the pH buffer solutions (included in the measurement sets).
